Enniscrone Runners - Up in Connacht Seniors O 55, 2010 |
Front Row; Niall Kilroy, Paddy Dunleavy, John O Reilly, Peter Murphy (Captain), Ray Basquill, Richie Cloonan, Jim Bowe.
Back Row; David O Connor, Paul O Dea, Noel O Dowd, Padraig Tighe, Walter Doherty (Team Captain), Jim Rickard, Liam McCooey.
Match finals are generally very close encounters and this years Connacht Seniors O 55 was no exception. It takes a good team with great skills, competence and leadership to reach a final. Home advantage is always an asset in inter club matchplay and Bearna having the first leg at home was always likely to have an influence on the outcome. They arrived for the second leg at Enniscrone last Saturday with the assistance of 4/1 up from the first leg and looked relaxed and confident.
As the matches got underway, the wind stayed up and with true links conditions prevailing Bearna were not going to have it all their own way.The golf as expected was good and over the early holes the matches were close and provided an entertaining display for the large support for both teams. By the 13th hole the first match was decided with a great win for Jim Rickard and Ray. As the second match headed into the 14th, Jim Bowe and Niall were one down and looking good facing our tough closing holes. The third match of Paul and Noel finished on the 15th with a great win for our men having never lost a hole throughout their match. The fourth match also finished on the 13th with another great win for Richie and John. So with two matches left, two wins were needed or one to force a play off. With really tough opposition in the second match, Jim and Niall were dormie three down but won the 16th and 17th. On the 18th Jim's shot went a bit left and Niall's shot into a bunker left too much to win the hole but no effort was spared by either man.
Back in the last match David and Padraig were battling bravely. Conceding eleven and nine shots to the opposition was always going to be tough and with all the other matches over, a large gathering rallied behind both teams. A great par from Padraig on the 15th with a shot here for a change to cancel out the opposition's advantage, left them two down. A win on the 16th was almost a must but again with Bearna having a shot cancelling out David's par, it was dormie two down on the 17th. A half on the 17th decided the match and the pennant on this occasion was Bearna's.
Well done to Walter and all team members for their dedication and committment to our club over the long summer months. Many team members belonged to the victorious Seniors O55 team of 2008 and we are unlikely to have seen the seen the last of them representing our club in the future. Roll on 2011!

Captains Prize, Mr Peter Murphy, 2010 |
After the torrential rain on Saturday and storm force winds later in the night, a clearing came just in time for the first competitors at 5:20 am to commence Mr Peter Murphy's Captain's Prize. Apart from the odd light shower, the sun shone all day and the wind stayed down giving ideal conditions for golf. Playing off a full length 'greens' with some strategic pin positions, the course was ready to provide a fair but judicious test to select the best golfers in our Club. Over 160 members played on the day on a course in great condition and very well presented.
In contrast to previous years when very few competitors would break par, this year 27 players equalled par or better with an astonishing 22 players breaking par. Top of the qualifiers were Billy O Riordan and Ray Basquill with a score of 66, each scoring 4 birdies in their round. They were followed by Archie McMahon and John Griffin with scores of 68 and Pat Sweeney and James Cunningham were 2 further back on 70. Nine players shot a 71 [Walter Doherty, Liam Hallinan, Kenny McGrath, Jim Rickard, Eugene Maguire, Paul McStay, Randal Cross, John Rush, Sean Mulligan], 7 shot a 72 [Martin McDonagh, Pat Forde ( who had a Hole in One on the third), Noel O Dowd, Seosamh Regan, Jack Ruane, Judd Ruane, Tim Gallagher] and 5 equalled par [Bernard Melly, Tommy Geraghty, Jim McLoughlin, Peter Hughes, Robert Jacob].
The Qualifiers set out on the third 9 shortly after 5pm with a lot of work to do for those carrying 70 or more from the morning. Judd Ruane was making great progress dropping his first shot on the 15th and John Griffin settled after an unsteady start. In the final group, a few wayward shots were making problems for Archie, last year's winner, but Ray the 2008 winner was steady as a rock alongside Billy. Four putts by Billy on the 14th (albeit being on in two) and 3 putting the 17th seemed to be relinquishing his fight but a solid par on the last was suffiicent to capture the coveted prize as Ray's second shot left too much for him to do. In his acceptance speech, Billy (who is also a member of Stackstown) said he was a member of Enniscrone Golf Club for ten years and reckoned it to be the best golf course in the country. He thanked Peter and everybody associated with the Club for all the work done in making it such a great club. He congratulated the Fred Daly team on their victory that day and said that the youth were the lifeblood of any club. And Billy enjoyed his few well deserved pints of Guinness late into the night!

Enniscrone Golf Club has been listed in 12th place in Ireland in a new ranking of links courses. The latest list of Irelands top courses features in the 2008 edition of Backspin magazine where Links/Shoreline courses are ranked separately to Parkland/Inland courses. This is the first time that this separation has taken place in ranking courses. Editor, Denis O Donoghue assembled a panel of 52 voters, Ryder Cup, Walker Cup and Curtis Cup players, championship winners, PGA Irish region competitors, members of the Irish golfing media and other Irish golf personalities. Each nominated their 15 favourite courses in the two categories. Points were awarded in descending order from 250 for a first choice to 50 for 15th choice. Well done to Enniscrone - now ranked number 3 of the North and West Coast Links Group.
