Notable Club Successes Print E-mail

Enniscrone Golf Club has a long history of participation in competitions.  In 1947 George Helly, playing off scratch, played in the West of Ireland Championship. The Sligo Champion of April 12th, 1947 described his exploits - "the intermediary stage produced little of interest apart from the manner in which a local golfer, G Helly, advanced well in the competition. In the quarter final Helly put up a marvellous fight against the experienced Willie Gill of Portmarnock. The scratch player from the Tireragh Club kept the matter in grave doubt right to the very end. The last hole was the deciding factor. There was never more than a hole between them, and if Helly just had a little luck he would have reached the semi-final. As it was, he was unfortunate to lose, but he made a highly satisfactory debut in the championship."

1963 Enniscrone Golf Club entered inter-club competition for the first time.

1964 the Connacht Shield team defeated Boyle, Carrick, Strandhill, Ballina and Ballyhaunis on their way to the final against Roscommon. This was despite the fact that there were only 14 golfers outside beginner status in the club. However they were deprived of outright victory by a result of 6/4. The members of the team were: Syl Shiel, George Helly, Des Hartnett, John Foley, Michael McGowan, Joe Llewellyn, Mark Hannon, Colm Hannon, Jim O Regan, Brendan Hannon, Michael O Regan, John Gordan andTommy Forde.

Down through the years our Club has attained many remarkable achievements and on so many other occasions the Club has reached various finals such as the J B Carr in 2007 and the Cecil Ewing in 2005.

Enniscrone Golf Club has been listed in 12th place in Ireland in a new ranking of links courses. The latest list of Irelands top courses features in the 2008 edition of Backspin magazine where Links/Shoreline courses are ranked separately to Parkland/Inland courses. This is the first time that this separation has taken place in ranking courses. Editor, Denis O Donoghue assembled a panel of 52 voters, Ryder Cup, Walker Cup and Curtis Cup players, championship winners, PGA Irish region competitors, members of the Irish golfing media and other Irish golf personalities. Each nominated their 15 favourite courses in the two categories. Points were awarded in descending order from 250 for a first choice to 50 for 15th choice. Well done to Enniscrone - now ranked number 3 of the North and West Coast Links Group.
